Do’s and Don’ts for Reference Giving

Do’s and Don’ts for Reference Giving

 The Do’s

  1. Know what sort of company and position the person is applying for. This will help you to personalise your reference and highlight relevant useful information.
  2. Speak highly of the person, but be honest. If you cannot give a positive reference, it is best not to say anything at all.
  3. Be available to answer any questions the Hiring Manager may have about the person you are referencing.

The Don’ts

  1. Don't speak negatively about the person you are referencing, even if asked directly by the Hiring Manager. This will only reflect poorly on both you and the actual individual.
  2. Don't offer more information than what is asked for. Stick to the facts and avoid giving your personal opinion.
  3. Don't provide a reference for someone you don't know well or whose work you are not familiar with. This could backfire and damage your own reputation.
