MV Software Engineer (Perm)

United KingdomPermanent, HybridEngineeringCompetitive + bonus + benefitsRef 870143

We are working with a household-name retail group to find a Software Engineer to join the team that develops and supports the MultiValue platform at the heart of its trading operations. These systems process orders, pricing, stock and branch activity across a nationwide network – so the work you do here matters every single day.

This is a chance to bring deep MultiValue (preferably UniData / UniVerse) expertise into a modern engineering team: one that works in Scrum, writes tests first, cares about clean code and is actively automating its delivery pipelines.

What you'll be doing

  • Developing, enhancing and supporting business-critical MultiValue applications, working within an established product and engineering roadmap
  • Becoming an internal subject-matter expert on key business processes, combining in-depth functional knowledge with strong technical and configuration skills
  • Clarifying requirements with stakeholders, giving estimates and technical input, and delivering to agreed cost, time and quality standards
  • Building the simplest possible solutions to business problems, with code that is testable, maintainable and low in complexity
  • Using TDD and BDD where appropriate, and supporting the team's wider aims around design patterns, software quality and pipeline automation
  • Making sure service resilience and security are considered in everything you build and test
  • Writing clear documentation and driving effective technical and business conversations
  • Taking part in retrospectives, acting on delivery metrics and giving (and taking) constructive feedback
  • Working with internal teams and third-party suppliers, and stepping into the Scrum Master role when needed
  • Mentoring more junior engineers and helping build their skills and confidence

What we're looking for

Essential

  • Strong commercial experience developing on a MultiValue database platform (e.g. UniData, Universe, D3, jBase, OpenQM)
  • Solid BASIC programming skills and a good understanding of the MultiValue data model
  • Experience supporting live, business-critical systems and resolving issues under pressure
  • An engineering mindset – comfortable working with requirements, estimates, testing and source control
  • Clear communication skills, written and verbal, with technical and non-technical people

Highly desirable

  • UniData experience specifically
  • A background in merchanting, trade distribution, wholesale or retail supply chain systems (order processing, pricing, stock, branch operations)
  • Exposure to Agile / Scrum delivery, TDD or BDD
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing or modernising legacy platforms

Not ticking every box? Apply anyway – our client actively encourages applicants whose experience doesn't line up perfectly

(HOWEVER you MUST still have MultiValue experience!).

What's on offer

  • Competitive salary plus annual bonus
  • Contributory pension
  • Save-as-you-earn and buy-as-you-earn share schemes
  • Colleague discounts across a wide range of group businesses
  • Genuine training and development, with room to grow across a large group
  • An inclusive culture where people are encouraged to be themselves
