19000 – It's a Date!

19000 translates as 7 January 2020!

It's a PICK MultiValue Milestone date.

For more than half a century, developers working MultiValue have worked with internal dates with an epoch date, Day 0, of 31 December 1967.  This is the PICK date, a count of days since 31 December 1967, and it's now turned over to 19000.  So developers using any of the MultiValue products will now start seeing current dates starting with 19 rather than 18 as they peruse raw data.

This represents more than 52 years of PICK!

PICK has history.  Its history and evolution are interesting to follow to the present day.  In 2002, the MultiValue Family Tree poster was first released by Tincat Group.  To mark the 50th anniversary of the Pick Database, which was originally authored by Richard (Dick) Pick, Zumasys and Tincat Group pooled resources and updated it.  Now, to celebrate Day 19000, an updated version of the MultiValue Family Tree poster is available from pickmultivalue.com, where it can be downloaded or ordered in print form.

This special-edition poster incorporates “Pick Date 19000” in its copyright.

In order to produce this updated version, additional interviews and research, as well as graphic redesign, went into it.

Dawn Wolthius, President of Tincat Group, says, "We did more rounds of interviews and zeroed in on knowing which products were developed from scratch.  I will grant that I extended a measure of grace when considering UPIX. Stories abound in this poster.”

Paul Giobbi, President of Zumasys, says, "This is a major milestone that showcases the strength and longevity of the PICK MultiValue System.  There aren’t many currently supported computer systems that can say they’ve been in use for 52 years.”

The poster is a living document, and suggestions for its improvement are encouraged. Enthusiasts with knowledge of the industry are welcome to share their ideas at pickmultivalue.com.
