3 Ways to Decline to Give a Reference

3 Ways to Decline to Give a Reference

If you're asked to provide a reference for someone and don't feel comfortable doing so or are unable to do so, there are a few things you can do.

  1. You can simply decline to comment. This is perfectly acceptable, and the person asking for the reference should accept and respect your position.
  2. You can provide basic contact information without going into any detail about the person's work history or skills. This is also perfectly acceptable, and it's up to the person asking for the reference to decide what to do with this information.
  3. You can be honest about your reasons for not wanting to provide a reference. This is usually the best option, as it avoids any potential misunderstandings or hurt feelings.

Whatever you do, do not just let the request lay languishing in your Inbox as that can reflect badly on you.
