AWR – a quick summary

AWR stands for Agency Workers Regulations and these will come into force on 1st October 2011.

Background to the AWR
This comes from the EU Directive which aims to get equal treatment for part-time and fixed-term workers.  The initial drafts were blocked in Brussels for many years even though equal treatment for temporary workers has been in operation in many European countries since the 1980′s. In 2008, not enough countries were continuing to block the Directive in Brussels so the UK Government agreed a compromise deal with business and unions which meant that equal treatment would apply after 12 weeks of an assignment.m  (However some Day 1 rights remain) In January 2010, the UK Government published the final version of the UK Regulations and these regulations come into force from 1st October 2011.

AWR speed summary
Temporary workers will have the right to equal treatment with regards to pay, holidays and working conditions once they have completed a 12 week qualifying period.   However, they will have some immediate rights to facilities as of Day 1.
